Life Happens – the Blog

by Darlene Baker

There's something about a rainy afternoon that lends itself to reminiscing. Weather in Indiana has always been unpredictable, and lately it seems, in addition, quite capricious. Yesterday, it rained 3" just 1/4 mile from our farm, while we got less than 1/2". A few weeks ago, it only rained on the hay field where my husband was baling hay, and literally nowhere else close - the next closest rain was 4 miles away.
We have extended excessive heat warnings for next week, and little to no rain. That means hay is getting cut and baled, and that means the guys will be out, and at our place the tractors don't have cabs. It'll be coolers with gatorade, bottled water and electrolytes all week - sweat soaked, dust covered clothes to launder every night - long hours in the heat and worry every day about surprise rain before the hay is under cover. And - we wouldn't change this life for anything.
